Drill press vice improvements.

BEFORE

AND AFTER

The 3 inches Drill press vice is a cheap light weight article  and not very suitable on my new Milling Machine . So I have decided to make some alterations, beefing it up where we can and make it more user friendly, by cutting of some parts and adding new  parts at strategic places.

Picture on the right milling the sides of the vice removing the securing slots making it virtually the same size as the milling machine table.

Picture on the left the finished product the securing slots removed , sides machined parallel ready for the next step.

Pictures on the right alterations made to the spindle.

Top Right picture indentation made with a drill bit

Right bottom a grove made where the indentation was for the positioning Allan screw to hold the sliding jaw in position on opening it.

Picture on the left removed the pin from the swivel handle and removed handle . made a new head for the spindle of 25 mm round stock it was press fitted and welded.

machined the round stock , used a krurling tool to give it a good grip. Drilled a 10 mm hole in the head to use a round bar to tighten the work in my improved vice

Picture on the right the material for beefing up the yaws of my drill press vice.

Picture on the left and Right  started machining the yaws to make them fit the revamped drill press vice. I had to make up an extension gadget to pick up some of the hole so they can be drilled and will line up properly

Picture on the left the finished product all bolted together and milled square all round . A big improvement over the original vice as supplied by the hardware store. there is an ongoing plan to make things better next project we will make an new base for this vice to make it possible to bolt it to the milling machine table.

Picture on the right a base plate made for the drill press and bolted on to the vice with four counter sank M6 Allen screws.

Picture on the left looking at the top of the drill press vice with the bottom mounting plate bolted in to place and the holes drilled ready to bolt it on to the Milling machine table.

Picture on the right the drill press vice mounted  on the milling machine a      8 m/m X 6.5 m/m deep recess Cut in the top of the  yaws for ease of mounting.  Small jobs  , a removable handle with a knurled hand grip made for tightening the vice .

Vice mounted on the milling machine table and ready to get used.

final touch milled a 90 degree grove in one of the jaws so any bar stock clamped will be square , groove is          3 mm deep.

After having  used it four times.

As shown in the picture it dint work out as planned on using it for the fourth time I heard it crack the picture shows the result, it seemed like a very good idea  at the time but it turned out to be an absolute disaster, and not to be repeated.
